As a golf instructor, people often ask me for help, one of the most useful pieces of advice I can offer is how to improve your golf swing quickly.
If you are a golfer the chances are that you will constantly be looking for ways to improve your overall game, not every one has endless hours available to spend practicing so it’s important to get the most of your available time. One of the key aspects of golf and the fundamental area you should aim to improve above all else is your golf swing.
Your swing is the foundation with which you build the rest of your game. If your swing is not correct, your accuracy will suffer and you will be playing catch up for the rest of your round. If your swing is good the rest of your game will fall into place around it.
There are several things you can do to quickly improve your golf swing. The first step is to establish a good grip. The first stage to establishing a good grip is to use the correct amount of grip pressure. This is important because the hinge of your wrist is vital to generating power and the rotation of the club needs to be correct to allow a good contact with the ball to avoid slicing. If your grip is too tight both of these aspects will suffer greatly. When thinking of how to improve your golf swing always begin here.
To find the correct amount of pressure in your grip, try to imagine that you are holding onto a baby bird to prevent it escaping. You must hold it tight enough to keep it in place but not too tight so that you hurt it. This is a major part of how to improve your golf swing quickly.
There are three main types of grip. The majority of professionals will use an overlap grip. This allows the maximum amount of control and it the grip I recommend to all my students except people who suffer with arthritis in their hands
or wrists.
To correctly use the overlap grip, also know as the Vardon Overlap, you should first place your lead hand on the top of the club, if you are right handed the lead hand is your left and the opposite for left handed golfers. Next, place your trailing hand further down the club and place the little finger of the trailing hand over the index finger of the lead hand. The lead hands’ thumb should then fit in place around the club and into the palm of the trailing hand.
If you suffer from arthritis or other pain in your hands and are considering how to improve your golf swing quickly, you should use a ten finger grip. This means that you simply hold the club with all ten fingers with no overlap at all. The thumb of your trailing hand should run parallel to the club.
When you have established a sound grip the rest of your technique will feel a lot more natural. If your fingers are correctly placed on your club, your arms will also be correctly placed for your swing.
When considering how to improve your golf swing quickly, the next thing to remember is that you are trying to hit the ball as squarely as possible to get a true, straight shot. If you stand square to the ball, square up the club face and swing true, all the way thru the ball and into the direction of your shot you should achieve a good swing.
Try to rotate your body in a smooth, free motion in order to present the club face correctly to the ball and follow right the way thru to complete the swing. Do not worry about power yet. Many players look for too much power and technique and accuracy suffer as a result. If you establish a good technique the power will come naturally.
Another thing to consider when thinking of how to improve your golf swing quickly is foot position. Place your feet either side of the ball and stand square to the ball. Run thru your swing a couple of times before you strike the ball, when you do this look at the angle the club is hitting the ball, if it is not totally square adjust your feet and your swing until the club is hitting the ball correctly.
When you have established a good basic swing the next step is to practice. When you do this keep these tips in mind and run thru a set of checks to make sure everything is correct. Eventually muscle memory will take over and your improved swing will be second nature to you.
